Why

Adding a trigger provider meant editing six files GitHub had shaped: the sentence grammar, the menu table, the slot renderer, the card's option fetching, the matcher, and the dispatcher. Two agents adding Slack and Linear in parallel would collide on every one of them. This PR makes a provider one module plus registry lines, so those can proceed in parallel.

Zero behaviour change is the bar. Nothing user-visible should differ.

What

Desktop — providers/<name>/ owns a provider's config kind, icon, Add Trigger subtree, config factory and sentence renderer. Three things iterate TRIGGER_PROVIDERS instead of naming providers:

  • TriggerMenuItems renders the menu (single-leaf providers become the leaf; multi-leaf become a submenu)
  • flattenTriggerMenu builds the search index — same registry, so menu and search can't drift
  • TriggerSentence hands the row's state (set, mark, options, disabled) to whichever provider owns the config

Pickable values move to per-provider hooks composed by useProviderOptions; the card no longer knows what a repository is.

Shared — automation-matching splits the same way: shared primitives in core.ts, GitHub's matcher in github.ts, and triggerMatches(config, event, ctx) dispatching on config.kind. A kind with no matcher does not match — an event for a provider that can't yet evaluate it must not fire by default.

DB — doing this exposed that packages/db's hand-written TriggerConfig had drifted from the zod schema that validates every write (events: string[] vs event: string; an "org_members" actor the schema never had). The only thing keeping it from a runtime mismatch was an as never at the read site. DB types are now derived from the schema and that cast is gone.

To add a provider

  1. providers/<name>/ implementing TriggerProvider
  2. append to TRIGGER_PROVIDERS
  3. a case in triggerMatches
  4. if it has pickable values, its hook in useProviderOptions

Verified in the running app

  • menu lists the same 3 providers with icons; GitHub submenu has the same 11 entries
  • search still flattens to GitHub › PR review submitted › Approved
  • a comment trigger renders, configures and saves — Triggers saved, zero console errors
  • schedule row shows one clock (provider-supplied) not two
  • typecheck and lint pass with real exit codes

One intentional visual: the schedule row's clock now comes from the provider like every other row's icon, rather than ScheduleSentence drawing its own. Same pixel, one source.

Summary by cubic

Refactors triggers so providers are additive and registry-driven. Behavior is unchanged; an unknown persisted GitHub event that previously crashed the editor now renders as its raw name.

  • Desktop: providers/<name>/ owns a provider’s kind, icon, Add Trigger subtree, config factory, and sentence renderer. TriggerMenuItems, flattenTriggerMenu, and TriggerSentence iterate TRIGGER_PROVIDERS. Pickable values move to per-provider hooks composed by useProviderOptions, so TriggersCard no longer fetches repos/people directly. The schedule row’s clock icon now comes from the provider (same visual). Unknown GitHub events render as text to avoid an editor crash.
  • Shared/API: @superset/shared/automation-matching splits into core.ts (shared primitives) and provider modules; triggerMatches dispatches on config.kind. The GitHub webhook route uses triggerMatches with provider context. A kind with no matcher does not match.
  • DB: TriggerConfig and related types derive from the zod schema in @superset/shared, removing drift and unsafe casts.

Migration

  • Add a provider by implementing providers/<name>/ as a TriggerProvider, appending it to TRIGGER_PROVIDERS, adding its case to triggerMatches, and registering its options hook in useProviderOptions if needed. No data or user migration is required.

Written for commit 0884ca8. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a unified automation trigger editor for schedule, GitHub, and webhook triggers.
    • Added provider-based trigger menus with icons, grouped options, and sentence-style configuration.
    • Added GitHub repository, branch, label, actor, and comment filters.
    • Added schedule defaults, timezone handling, and next-run information.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved trigger matching for scopes, actors, and text filters.
    • Invalid regular expressions now safely produce no match.
  • Style
    • Removed the unused clock icon from schedule controls.

Adding a trigger provider meant editing six files GitHub had shaped: the
sentence grammar, the menu table, the slot renderer, the card's option
fetching, the matcher, and the dispatcher. Two agents adding Slack and
Linear in parallel would have collided on every one of them.

Each provider is now one module — providers/<name>/ owns its config kind,
icon, Add Trigger subtree, config factory and sentence renderer — and three
things iterate a registry instead of naming providers: TriggerMenuItems
renders the menu, flattenTriggerMenu builds the search index, and
TriggerSentence hands the row's state to whichever provider owns the
config. Pickable values move to a per-provider hook composed by
useProviderOptions; the card no longer knows what a repository is.

Server side, automation-matching splits the same way: shared primitives
(scopeAllows, actorAllows, bodyMatches) stay in core, GitHub's matcher
moves to its own module, and triggerMatches dispatches on config.kind so
the webhook route never names a provider. A kind with no matcher does not
match — an event arriving for a provider that cannot yet evaluate it must
not fire the automation by default.

Doing this exposed that packages/db's hand-written TriggerConfig had
drifted from the zod schema that validates every write to the column —
`events: string[]` where the schema says `event: string`, an
`"org_members"` actor the schema never had — and the only thing keeping it
from a runtime mismatch was an `as never` at the read site. The db types
are now derived from the schema, and that cast is gone.

Zero behaviour change is the bar, verified in the running app: the menu
lists the same three providers with icons, the GitHub submenu has the same
eleven entries, search still flattens to "GitHub › PR review submitted ›
Approved", and a comment trigger renders, configures and saves with no
console errors. The schedule row now gets its clock from the provider like
every other row, rather than drawing its own.

To add a provider: write providers/<name>/, append it to TRIGGER_PROVIDERS,
add its matcher case to triggerMatches, and — if it has pickable values —
its hook to useProviderOptions. Nothing else should need to change.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The PR centralizes automation matching, derives trigger types from shared schemas, and introduces provider-based automation trigger menus and sentence renderers for schedule, GitHub, and webhook triggers. GitHub webhook dispatch now uses the shared matcher.

GitHub webhook dispatch passes candidates to triggerMatches with event names and owner GitHub identities.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to 0884c

The PR executes user-authored regular expressions while processing webhook requests; a pathological pattern could stall the API event loop and affect webhook handling, so merging should wait for mitigation or explicit owner acceptance.

Move MenuEntries into its own file.

This file now defines two components. The coding guidelines require one component per file. Place MenuEntries in TriggerMenuItems/MenuEntries/MenuEntries.tsx with an index.ts barrel export, next to its only consumer.

As per coding guidelines: "One component per file: No multi-component files" and "Co-locate by usage: If used once, nest under parent's components/".

Add a compile-time completeness check over trigger kinds.

The registry is a plain array, so a kind added to TriggerConfigInput in @superset/shared registers no provider and stays undetected until providerFor throws during render. That throw happens inside TriggerSentence, so one unknown kind removes the whole triggers card instead of one row.

Assert coverage at the type level so the omission fails typecheck.

+type MissingProvider = Exclude<TriggerConfigInput["kind"], RegisteredKind>;
+const _allKindsRegistered: MissingProvider extends never ? true = true;

Note that TRIGGER_PROVIDERS must drop the widening as TriggerProvider casts (or use satisfies) for RegisteredKind to stay narrow.

Share the single-leaf detection with the menu renderer.

Lines 32-33 decide that a provider has one leaf. TriggerMenuItems.tsx lines 34-36 repeat the same decision to choose between a flat item and a submenu. The two copies can drift, and then search paths and submenu shape disagree for the same provider.

Export one helper from providers/ and call it in both places.

 		return flattenEntries(
 			provider.menu,
 			single ? [] : [provider.label],
 			provider.icon,
 		);
 	});

Add to providers/index.ts:

/** The provider's only leaf, when its menu is a single create entry. */
export function singleLeaf(provider: TriggerProvider) {

The untyped sentence patch forces an unchecked config merge. SentenceContext.set accepts Record<string, unknown>, so the provider config shape is lost at the definition site and the consumer must cast the merged config to never. Record<string, never> removes chip prop checking.

never is assignable to every type. After this cast, every c.<field> value satisfies any prop type, so a renamed config field or a slot wired to the wrong value type still compiles. The cast hides more than the union limitation it works around.

Declare the readable shape explicitly instead.

♻️ Proposed narrowing
-	const c = config as unknown as Record<string, never>;
+	// The slot list is derived from this event, so these fields are present on
+	// this config member even where the union type cannot say so.
+	const c = config as Partial<
+		Record<Slot, never>
+	> & {
+		repositories?: GithubConfig["repositories"];
+		branches?: Extract<GithubConfig, { branches: unknown }>["branches"];
+	};

A per-event slot-to-field map is the fuller fix if the union keeps growing.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Bound the regex work, not only the input length.

bodyMatches compiles a user-authored pattern and runs it on the webhook request path. Backtracking is exponential in input length, so a 4096-character cap does not bound the runtime. A pattern such as ^(a+)+$ against a 4096-character non-matching body blocks the Node event loop and stalls every other webhook in the same process. The doc comment already identifies the risk; the current mitigation does not close it.

Apply at least one hard bound:

  • Reject patterns above a small length limit and lower MAX_FILTERED_BODY to a few hundred characters.
  • Validate the pattern with a safety checker (for example recheck) when the trigger is saved, so an unsafe pattern never reaches this path.
  • Or run the match with a linear-time engine (RE2-style), as the comment suggests.

This matches the static analysis warning for CWE-1333 at Line 96.

Preserve and log MatchResult.reason for rejected triggers

dispatchMatchingTriggers.ts is the only caller and supplies context.github. It reads only .matches, so reasons such as "no github context" are discarded. Preserve the result and log the reason when a trigger is rejected.

…hing

From CodeRabbit's review of this PR. The event comes from a persisted
config; if its grammar entry is ever removed or renamed,
GITHUB_SENTENCES[event] is undefined and .map throws during render, taking
the whole editor down. An unknown event now reads as its raw name.

The other finding — a ReDoS in bodyMatches — is unreachable: isRegex is
z.literal(false) in the schema, so no persisted config can take the regex
branch. Left as-is.

…m surfaces (#6594)

Eight provider agents building in parallel off #6571 all hit the same three
walls within the first hour, and each patched them differently. This lands
one answer for all three so they rebase onto it instead of merging eight
divergent copies.

1. Options were a flat "kind of thing" namespace (OptionKey = repositories |
   people | channels | teams). It doesn't hold: `people` for GitHub is
   numeric ids, for Slack it's Slack user ids; `projects` means different
   things to Linear and Sentry. Five agents each added their own key to
   types.ts. Options are now namespaced by provider —
   `options.github.repositories`, `options.slack.channels` — and no provider
   touches types.ts again.

2. MatchableEvent was GitHub's normalized event under a generic name:
   repositoryId, isFork, subjectAuthorId mean nothing to Slack. Every agent
   pushed its real fields into MatchContext.<provider>. The event is now
   provider-typed and discriminated by `provider`; BaseMatchableEvent holds
   only what every provider shares (eventType, actorId, actorLogin, body);
   MatchContext is just { ownerIds } — the one thing that is genuinely
   cross-provider, because it's how `me` resolves. GithubMatchableEvent
   carries repositoryId, isFork, names, etc. triggerMatches switches on
   event.provider and refuses a config/event provider mismatch.

3. dispatchMatchingTriggers was GitHub-typed, so three agents forked it. Its
   body is provider-agnostic — candidate query, identity map, match loop,
   QStash publish — only the payload normalization was GitHub. The generic
   part is now apps/api/src/lib/automations/dispatchMatchingTriggers.ts,
   selecting candidates by kind = event.provider and identities by the same,
   and GitHub's file is a ~60-line normalizer that calls it.

Also: SentenceContext.triggerId (three agents needed it, two wrote the
identical edit — landing it once), and main's a11y lint failure in
TerminalAgentAutoResume (span role=status → output), which was painting
every provider PR red.

Behaviour unchanged for GitHub; typecheck and lint clean across all 38
packages.
